World record holder Dennis Kimetto to race in Honolulu

Kimetto joins a strong elite field as Honolulu confirms commitment to world class marathon racing.

HONOLULU (November 7, 2017) The Honolulu Marathon Association, organizers of the fourth largest marathon in the United States, today announces that Kenya’s Dennis Kimetto, the current marathon world record holder, joins a stellar elite field on December 10.

The field also includes 2016 champion and course record holder, Lawrence Cherono and 2014 champion Wilson Chebet, both from Kenya.

Cherono set a Honolulu Marathon course record of 2:09:38 in 2016, breaking the previous record by 1 minute 34 seconds. His record breaking time was the third fastest winning time in a USA Marathon in 2016.

“The Honolulu Marathon strives to have the best possible athletes in our race. We have a storied tradition of great champions, including Olympic champions and Major marathon winners. But this will be the first time that the current world record holder in the marathon toes the Ala Moana Blvd starting line.” Jim Barahal, Honolulu Marathon CEO

Dennis Kimetto set the marathon world record of 2:02:57 in Berlin 2014 averaging 4:41min/mile.  He is the only person to ever go below 2hours 3 minutes on a record accredited marathon course.

Kimetto will also join 30,000 other participants at  the 45th Honolulu Marathon, which is held annually on the second Sunday in December. www.honolulumarathon.org
