Honolulu Marathon 2012 (5 of 22)In the women’s field, the contenders for the 2013 Honolulu Marathon include defending champion Valentina Galimova of Russia. She will again be up against Woynishet Girma of Ethiopia. In 2012 the two had an epic battle that lasted up until the last quarter mile on Kalakaua Avenue, when Galimova proved too strong  for the 2011 champion.

The men’s field includes Martin Lel, who will be racing in Honolulu for the first time. Abdi Abdirahmen from Tucson, Arizona is the first American male to contend for the title in Honolulu for many years.  Both will be up against Nicholas Chelimo, 2011 Honolulu champion, who has also been here to race in the Hapalua – Hawaii’s Half Marathon.

Martin Lel is a multiple winner of the London Marathon (2003, 2007 & 2008) and the New York City Marathon (2007).   Abdi Abdirahmen has competed for the United States in the last four Olympic Games.
